Because once we took it at a run to race a turned-off light to bed. Now we flick the switch down and place feet against the ground, proceed unafraid across the dark bedroom. Once we believed in a fill-in-the-blank progression of our lives.

A Bedtime Story
As long as there have been beds
there have been monster beneath them
and you still
remember the day when you discovered
that your bed
was just such a bed
You remember being alone
and knowing no one would
believe you
and knowing it was
only a matter of time
until it found you
So you made a lunge for it's tail
and now your in it, arn't you
If you let go of the monster’s tail
the one you have been holding
every day and night since
it might turn and bear it’s teeth
it might consume you
but it might just turn to smoke
The question is
which would be worse
being consumed
or hanging on to smoke
even a second
longer than
necessary
