Distain/Suspicion/Mistrust/Indifference.

Distain/Suspicion/Mistrust/Indifference.

Her face was not oblique

but obvious

like white type on the expression of a shadow

lit from behind by track lighting

It was clear

and it said with words

spoken into the collective silence of the serendipitous lull in the seven surrounding conversations taking place at a nice high end restaurant

the sentence

started “I”

and meant

that she loved him

tangibly

And so would never love him

Indecision

Distain

Suspicion

Mistrust

Indifference

blurred

the past tense of blur

it was blurred

as it was

it was not now

but now it was

as before

like your hand beneath turgid water

Cascade of blue house paint over red silk

fountains of gold leaf

Baroque

ornate

gaudy

glowing

pretty of course

but removed

and just for looks

Nothing is a pretty girl afraid of more

than love

being in and being
