The Way a Nail can be Swallowed Up in the Growth of a Tree

The Way a Nail can be Swallowed Up in the Growth of a Tree

And when we embrace

maybe our bones embrace

and our veins do too

maybe they jump ship and dance together

But we are careful not to overcommit, we keep our hearts on short leashes

we try not to kiss to desperately/humanly/greedily (in time, we say)

but there is a power in not letting go as well

if that is the one thing that is good

(if)

A poem for Ashley for an anniversary we hadn’t decided when to celebrate
